I NEVER TOLD YOU WHAT I DO FOR A LIVING

I was having a discussion with Jay, my guitarist, after last night's gig about having to take on a day-job (I sometimes get surprised that we actually have "grownup" discussions). Ideally we'd be making enough money to support ourselves through our gigs. Unfortunately the months have been lean, and we can expect to have leaner months due to promotion of our upcoming album. This lead us to talk about what we wanted for our careers.

Jay, who was married just two weeks ago, said he had to eventually work. He didn't want to be a career musician. He couldn't see himself just playing as a sideman for his whole life. He says you can only make so much as a musician. To a point, I agree with him.

My case it's different I think you can make a decent living as a career musician. What I want is for my band to do well; and make enough a month that we can live well and have savings. I know it can be done. I've done it before (except the saving part).

Here's hoping to being able to keep this course and be able to live on it. If this time I get to save, I'll look for some good investment that will make a good secondary investment. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Have you thought of teaching drums and cajon during the day, Frank? You, N and J can put together a little school. No need for monetary capital, just skill. Lotsa people out there have their own kits na. Or if you like, you can invest in your own little studio in your own home and have your students go to you :)

I did think about that. I actually came from a drum recital from a drum school my friend put up (I can actually teach there if I wanted). Thing is if that's the long term thing we want to do. But I am thinking about teaching. :)

Oh cool then :) At least there's an option that requires no capital. These days, it's so hard to start ventures with no moolah.

Good luck with your next steps, Fwank! :)
